Doctoral Program in   Computer Application Technology  (academic degree)

1. Introduction

Tianjin University established the computer discipline in 1958, and founded Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1983. It has cultivated tens of thousands of outstanding talents in the field of computer science for China, making it become one of the earliest universities engaging in teaching and scientific research in the field of computer science. The school of computer science and technology has a complete talents training system, including a post-doctoral mobile station, doctor degree, master degree, and bachelor degree programs. Tianjin first doctoral program in this discipline appeared in the school of Computer Science and Technology of Tianjin university. After 60 years of development, computer discipline has formed the following special research directions: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Advanced Computer Networks, Computer Vision and Media Information Processing, Network and Information System Security, Speech Generation Perception and Cognitive Computing, Semantic Computing and Knowledge Mining, Biocomputing, etc.

2. Objectives

The overall goal is to cultivate outstanding talents with global vision, innovative spirit and practical ability. This program is aimed to develop high-level professionals in computer science and technology filed in all-round way including the morality, intelligence, physical health and art. The Ph.D. students of this profession should master a solid and broad basic theory and systematic in-depth expertise, techniques and methods in computer science and technology. The students shall have ability of doing research work independently, and can produce creative results in his expertise. They are proficient in a foreign language, reading foreign language materials of their specialty, and can write research papers in foreign languages. They have abilities to work in research, teaching and technology development work in higher education institutions, research institutions and related industry sectors.

3. Program Training and Duration

Program training: The training mode adopts the supervisor responsibility system, and the supervisor-centered tutorial group system can also be implemented. The two parts of course study and scientific research are included during the study period. The courses i adopts credit system and the required credits should be completed before applying for final thesis defense.

Program duration: The basic minimum study period for Ph.D. students is 4 years. The maximum length of study for a Ph.D. student is 6 years.

4. Requirements for Compulsory Training Procedures

Frontier Lectures: this procedure refers to numbers of academic lectures or reports that students shall attend in relevant disciplines during the study period, in order to understand the frontier developments and expand the academic horizon. Doctoral students should participate in at least two frontier lectures related with his discipline per semester.

Academic conferences: This procedure requires students toned to participate in academic conferences for  academic exchanges and broaden academic horizons. Doctoral students should participate in at least two academic conference, one of them should be international academic conference.

Basic requirements: Master students need to participate in at least 1 lecture per semester, and doctoral students need to participate in at least 2 subject-leading lectures per semester. The materials and grades of this procedure in this session are submitted through the online system, and the paper documents are filed to the college for record.

Article reading and report: this procedure means that graduate students should read a certain number of relevant classic articles related to the major during their studies, and complete a report to summarize this, in order to lay the foundation for future scientific research. Basic requirements: PhD students should read 20 articles or papers per semester and complete relative reports. The articles or papers to read shall be determined by the supervisors.

Group meeting report: This procedure requires students need to participate in the academic exchange and report on research progress within the research group. Doctoral students must submit at least three group meeting reports in PPT and Word version per semester.

Training on how to write scientific projects proposal: This procedure requires students need to study and practice on how to write scientific research projects proposals, be familiar with the procedure of scientific research project application. Doctoral students must complete at least one training in writing scientific research project proposal.

Proposal for final thesis: the proposal for final thesis procedure shall be organized by the supervisor. The proposal for non-confidential thesis shall be conducted publicly in the form of academic reports. The college can invite the supervisory team to listen. Supervisor of the student should invite 3-5 experts who are associate professor or professors from relative research fields to form a jury committee. The committee discuss over innovation and feasibility of the student’s research proposal. If the topic of the dissertation is interdisciplinary, experts from relative disciplines should be invited to participate. Students will report on the proposed topics for no less than 15 minutes and answer the questions of the review committee. This jury panel will discuss over whether this student can complete the task of the research topic and enter the stage of dissertation, then make a clear assessment. The student students should make a complete record of the defense, and ask for signatures of the jury panel.

Mid-Term Evaluation: Mid-term Evaluation for Master students should be organized by the college before the end of the third semester. The assessment materials shall be kept by the Graduate Affairs office in the College. The mid-term evaluation for master students is organized by the college once every semester. The judging panel shall consist of no less than 5 people, including the leader of this discipline, a member of the degree sub-committee, and the supervisor in order to assess the students' professional learning and research progress. Students should fill in forms in accordance with the requirements in the “Medium-Term Evaluation Form” and submit the transcripts, current research results and report and the publication of the journal or conference papers to the judging panel. The mid-term evaluation is conducted in the form of anonymous review, focusing on the phased summary on the work of the thesis, expounding the content of the completed work and the phased results obtained and the next phase of work plans, and the problems encountered during the work of the thesis. In particular, the key points that are inconsistent with the content of the proposal shall be highlighted, and the next work plan and the research content that needs to be completed shall be demonstrated. The supervisor needs to give an evaluation of the mid-term evaluation of the student. The evaluation includes an evaluation of the existing work, as well as an evaluation of the completion of the training plan, the performance of the student, and the future work.

5. Diploma requirements

The relevant requirements of the final degree shall be in accordance with the requirements of Tianjin University master and doctoral degree work implementation documents. Besides the final degree thesis, master students should publish journal or conference papers and meet the requirements of Tianjin University Degree Committee fifteenth sub-committee before they are awarded degree.
