College of Intelligence and Computing

1. General Introduction

The computer science discipline of Tianjin University was founded in 1958. After 60 years of development, the discipline is equipped with excellent faculty and academic structure, numerous teaching and research bases with interdisciplinary characteristics. There are key laboratories of provincial and ministerial level related to cognitive computing and application, advanced network technology and application, cultural heritage ontology testing, National Astronomical Observatory-Tianjin University Astronomical Joint Research Center, International Knowledge Engineering Research Center, Computational Biology Research Center, etc.

The discipline closely follows the national needs and develops the following characteristic directions: advanced computer network technology, speech information processing, visual media computing, large-scale knowledge map management, machine learning and data mining.

The discipline attaches great importance to the cultivation of practical ability, enhances students' communication skills, teamwork awareness, and engineering innovation and practical ability. The graduate students are popular among the employers. Long-term and stable cooperative relations with enterprises and institutions is established. Joint laboratories, including but not limited to  NAOC-TJU Astronomical Information Technology Joint Laboratory, IBM New Technology Center, China Information Security Evaluation Center (Tianjin) Sub-center-Tianjin University Network Security Joint Lab, Xilinx-Tianjin University Computer System Design Joint Lab, Ganji Network-Mobile Internet Joint Lab and Tianjin University-Zhongxing Smart City and Big Data Joint Lab are established to cultivate students with practical and also academic abilities.

2. Training Objectives

The major is objected to cultivate talents with global vision, innovative spirit and practical ability with solid professional knowledge. The students shall be able to follow the latest and frontiers development in this subject area, master the engineering and practical skills of the subject, master a foreign language skillfully, be able to adapt to the needs of scientific progress and social development, and have the ability to independently undertake works or researches related to Computer Science. At the same time, the students shall have a rigorous attitude towards research, cooperative spirit for teamwork and strong communication skills. After graduation, the students shall be competent in engineering design, software and hardware system development related to the computer science field, and lay a solid foundation for becoming an academic leader or technical leader in the future. .

3. Duration

This training program adopts the combination of school studying, scientific research training and engineering projects training, under dual-tutor system of supervisors on and off campus.

General study duration is 2.5 years.

4. Compulsory Training Procedures

Frontier Lectures: this procedure refers to numbers of academic lectures or reports that students shall attend in relevant disciplines during the study period, in order to understand the frontier developments and expand the academic horizon. Basic requirements: Master students need to participate in at least 1 lecture per semester, and doctoral students need to participate in at least 2 subject-leading lectures per semester. The materials and grades of this procedure in this session are submitted through the online system, and the paper documents are filed to the college for record.

Article reading and report: this procedure means that graduate students should read a certain number of relevant classic articles related to the major during their studies, and complete a report to summarize this, in order to lay the foundation for future scientific research. Basic requirements: master students should read at least 10 articles or papers per semester and complete relative reports. PhD students should read 20 articles or papers per semester and complete relative reports. The articles or papers to read shall be determined by the supervisors. The materials and grades of this procedure shall be submitted through the online system, and the paper documents are filed by the college for record.

Proposal for final thesis: the proposal for final thesis procedure shall be organized by the supervisor. The proposal for non-confidential thesis shall be conducted publicly in the form of academic reports. The college can invite the supervisory team to listen. The graduate student will need to do a report of not less than 15 minutes on his/her proposed topic and answer the questions of the judging panel who is listening to the report. After the discussion, the judging panel made a clear assessment of whether the student is capable of completing the task and whether the student can enter the final thesis dissertation stage. The graduate student will make a record of this report and the judging panel needs to sign. After this proposal stage is passed, the topic selection of the dissertation cannot be changed freely. If it is necessary to change due to special circumstances, the new topic must be proposed again. If the students does not pass the proposal procedure, it is allowed to reopen again within six months. If the student still fails, the supervisor must re-determine the student's topic or persuade him to drop out from the university. At the procedure of the final examination of graduation qualification, the college will need to examine the proposal report again together with the final thesis. If the thesis topic is changed without relative procedures or if the workload of the thesis is not satisfied without the requirements, this students will not be accepted to the final thesis defense procedure.

Mid-Term Evaluation: Mid-term Evaluation for Master students should be organized by the college before the end of the third semester. The assessment materials shall be kept by the Graduate Affairs office in the College. The mid-term evaluation for master students is organized by the college once every semester. The judging panel shall consist of no less than 5 people, including the leader of this discipline, a member of the degree sub-committee, and the supervisor in order to assess the students' professional learning and research progress. Students should fill in forms in accordance with the requirements in the “Medium-Term Evaluation Form” and submit the transcripts, current research results and report and the publication of the journal or conference papers to the judging panel. The mid-term evaluation is conducted in the form of anonymous review, focusing on the phased summary on the work of the thesis, expounding the content of the completed work and the phased results obtained and the next phase of work plans, and the problems encountered during the work of the thesis. In particular, the key points that are inconsistent with the content of the proposal shall be highlighted, and the next work plan and the research content that needs to be completed shall be demonstrated. The supervisor needs to give an evaluation of the mid-term evaluation of the student. The evaluation includes an evaluation of the existing work, as well as an evaluation of the completion of the training plan, the performance of the student, and the future work. The judging panel shall assess the staged situation of the graduate thesis. The results are divided into three levels: A (pass), B (pass after modification), and C (fail). Students who fail the mid-term evaluation can participate in the mid-term evaluation again after half a year. If the students fail again, it is recommended to follow the withdrawal process.

5. Thesis requirements

The relevant requirements of the final degree thesis shall be in accordance with the requirements of Tianjin University master and doctoral degree work implementation documents. Besides the final degree thesis, master students should publish journal or conference papers and meet the requirements of Tianjin University Degree Committee fifteenth sub-committee before they are awarded degree.

6. Courses and Credits

Total credit needed shall be no less than 36 credits, among which 25 credits from courses learning and 11 credits from compulsory training procedures.
