On March 29, Hu Qinghua, Deputy Director of Tianjin University’s College of Intelligence and Computing and Professor Yu Ce attended the unveiling ceremony of theNational Astronomical Data Center (NADC)held at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) and signed a cooperative construction agreement on building theNational Astronomical Data Center Technical R&D Innovation Center.
NADC is a data intensive cyber infrastructure and also a science platform for astronomy research, education and data-driven applications. Being part of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure (NSTI), NADC is authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), supervised by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and hosted at NAOC. After years of development, NADC has accumulated a large amount of astronomical data. How to mine valuable astrophysical laws from massive astronomical observation data is an important challenge and the key to utilizing astronomical data.
Tianjin University were invited to participate in the co-construction of the technical research and development innovation center for the achievements it has made in the fields of big data analysis, data mining and machine learning, and astronomical information processing.
The research team from Tianjin University’s College of Intelligence and Computing has been engaged in astronomical information technology research for more than ten years and undertaken some of the key research and development work of NADC in the past. The team members once worked with NAOC and developed the fundamental software and system of Chinese Virtual Observatories that served as the foundation of NADC. Besides, their work on space weather forecast model and the data processing methods and systems for astronomical scientific facilities such as Antarctic AST3 telescopes and FAST telescope has achieved fruitful results.
The establishment of the National Astronomical Data Center Technical R&D Innovation Center is a new milestone. The innovation center aims at the construction of standard system, the research and development of basic software tools, and the research of data storage and access optimization technology for astronomical data and analysis, in order to build an intelligent base for astronomical data mining and promote the development of interdisciplinary astronomical informatics.
