In the project, Prof. Tao cooperated with researchers from TCPS Company Limited, Hebei University of Technology, Nankai University and other units and studied about the core technology for applying big data and artificial intelligence to Urban public transport system.

Prof. Tao’s team carried out innovative research in basic theories, technology applications and system integration. Through the research and analysis on big data in the bus system, the team developed a national smart bus integration solution combined with on-board equipment and a schedule system. Service functions such as bus operation monitoring, safety monitoring, electronic payment and billing, intelligent scheduling, and passenger traffic mileage monitoring in cities across the country have been implemented.

The achievements of this project were successfully applied to more than 220 cities in China such as Hangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Chengdu and other cities. In the past three years, 130,000 sets of various vehicle-mounted equipment have been produced and sold out, which creates direct economic benefits of more than 400 million yuan. Meanwhile, these products have been exported to Central and South American countries and used nationwide in Venezuela and El Salvador, earning more than $20 million in foreign exchange. The project won 25 related patents and also the Tianjin Patent Excellence Award, including 8 authorized invention patents, 23 software copyrights. More than 30 high-level papers were published. The team also participated in the formulation of 4 national standards.
